A MARINE SURVEY FOR THE BOAT YOU ALREADY OWN
Need an “in water” survey for Insurance or Financial purposes?
This is the survey for you.
“IN WATER SURVEY”
An in the water “condition and valuation” survey is conducted for the purpose of providing a survey report for “safety”, insurance, or financial purposes.
The “condition and valuation” survey should not be confused with a “Pre-Purchase” survey. A pre-purchase survey is a much more in-depth survey that includes a sea-trial and more extensive testing of equipment, and related systems.
The insurance or financial condition and valuation survey is an “overall evaluation” of the vessel, “safety” equipment, her through-hull fittings and associated plumbing, machinery installations, fuel, exhaust, and electrical system, rigging, and electronics listing (no testing) and other related systems installed aboard.
Evaluations are non-destructive and non-intrusive. No portion of the vessel is examined that requires the disassembly of any structure or machinery and the surveyor will not commission any machinery or systems that are not in operating order at the time of the survey.
Preparing the vessel for the survey is the owner’s responsibility. Specifically, you should take any action necessary to ensure reasonable access to the vessel’s system (steering, machinery, sea valves, batteries, fuel tanks, etc.). This may require temporary relocation of loose or heavy gear stowed in cockpit lockers (sails, anchors, inflatable boats, cleaning and maintenance products, canvas, etc.). On some vessels access to the machinery spaces may be limited by the carpet or heavy furniture. These items must be moved prior to the survey to allow access to the space. If the vessel’s owner lives aboard, the surveyor will not move personal effects to gain required access.
Need an “out of water” survey for Insurance or Financial purposes?
This is the survey for you.
“OUT OF WATER SURVEY”
An “out of water” condition and valuation survey includes all of the overall evaluation items noted above, in addition to a survey of the hull bottom and the “running gear”.
It is your responsibility for making the arrangements necessary for yard services such as hauling of the vessel, bottom washing, and blocking if necessary. Hull bottoms and underwater gear must be washed and cleaned of marine growth. Most marine yards require payment at the time of the haul out. This is your responsibility.
The completed survey report, specific to your boat, and all of the digital pictures taken during the survey process will be sent to you by e-mail.
The survey takes a good portion of the day and you are encouraged to attend.

“PRE-PURCHASE SURVEY”
For Condition, Insurance, and Financial Purposes of a vessel you intend to purchase.
Fiberglass Monohulls – Private Pleasure Craft
A “pre-purchase survey”, is an in-depth survey that includes an evaluation of the vessel, a sea trial, and a hull bottom survey.
An evaluation of the vessel, which includes her “items of safety”, through-hull fittings and associated plumbing, machinery installations, fuel, exhaust, and electrical system, rigging, electronics, and related systems installed aboard is conducted. Evaluations are non-destructive and non-intrusive. No section of the vessel will be examined that requires disassembly of any structure or machinery and the surveyor will not commission any machinery or systems that are not in operating order at the time of the survey.
Standing rigging and spars are observed from deck level only. An “aloft” rigging inspection is not conducted. Rigging above the deck level is viewed from the deck with the aid of binoculars and or digital photos.
Within surveyor safety considerations, an engine “evaluation” is performed during the “sea trial”. As accessible, the operation and performance of the engine are monitored, operating temperatures are noted, and RPMs vs. speed are plotted. This should not be confused with an “engine survey”. No removals are made and cylinder compression readings are not taken. However, the evaluation does provide you with valuable engine performance information to assist you in making an informed decision.
A “bottom survey” which includes an examination of the hull, shaft, propeller, and underwater fittings are included in the per foot service fee rate.
It is your responsibility for making the necessary arrangements and payments for yard services such as hauling of the vessel, bottom washing, and blocking if necessary. Hull bottoms and underwater gear should be washed and cleaned of marine growth to permit the most accurate assessment of the hull condition. Most marine yards require payment at the time of the haul out.
It will be extremely helpful if you request that the vessel be made “survey ready” by removing personal items and unnecessary gear to allow access to all spaces and compartments.
The completed survey report, specific to your boat, and all of the digital pictures will be sent to you via e-mail.
The survey will take a full day or longer depending on the length of the vessel and the complexity of her systems. You are encouraged to attend, ask questions and take the opportunity to accompany the surveyor throughout the survey process. Be prepared for a full day’s activity.
